Chinese Peking Opera Singer Painting

  • Peking Opera is a specific form of Chinese Opera which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics.  It arose in the late 18th century and became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century.  The form was extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty court and has come to be regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China.
  • Originally, acting was an all male pursuit, but the rules were relaxed in the 1870's and now females are usually stars of the show.  In this classical Chinese painting a female Peking Opera singer is seen with arms crossed gracefully awaiting her performance.
